These are people who did not let their physical problem get in the way of success. People like Helen Keller are extremely well known for achieving despite profound visual and hearing handicaps. But she is not alone. Many people achieve impressive accomplishments despite handicaps, either because they used hearing aids, or other help for a disability either from birth or acquired sometime later in life.

Linda Bove used hearing aids or other hearing assistance from birth

Linda Bove was deaf from childhood, probably from birth. Both of her parents were also deaf. She completed high school and college, although both schools were focused on deaf students. Although she majored in library science in college, she participated in several plays and after college became involved in theatre. She help start two acting companies for deaf people, the second one is with her husband. She has played several roles in theatre and on TV. She is probably best known for playing Linda the Librarian on Sesame. She is married to to another deaf actor, Ed Waterstreet. They have been married over 40 years.

Ed Waterstreet was born on May 5th, 1943 in Wisconsin and has used hearing aids.

He has been married to Linda Bove for over 40 years. He is an actor and is know best for the TV drama Sweet Nothing in My Ear. This is the story about parents who struggle to decide if their hearing impaired son should have a cochlear transplant. The parents of the child in the story used hearing aids themselves.

Furthermore in 1991 he and Linda founded The Deaf West Theater Company in Los Angeles. This group is focused on deaf actors and actresses. The plays that are preformed by this company are translated in Sign Language and preformed both in sign and speech to bridge the gap between speaking and signing.

This couple is evidence that people can have a positive, successful life, regardless of their handicap. Exactly what success means varies from person to person, but having a successful career and a long marriage certainly contribute to a fulfilled life.

These two people are examples of many people who have created a full life despite a handicap. They have had a long marriage, and successful careers which has made a difference to others. They are among many others who have used hearing aids and other supports for problem hearing to create a full life.
